How to Measure Composite Rods & Tubes

Are you designing a new product? Replacing a broken carbon or fiberglass rod or tube? Let us help you to precisely measure so you can be sure to order the correct composite part.

Composite rods and tubes are typically measured in two dimensions: diameter and overall length.

Diameter and Length

Diameter is the measurement of a straight line passing through the center of the rod or tube. In other words, diameter is a line segment through the center of the circle with its ends on the circle’s circumference.

The best way to measure the diameter of a composite rod or tube is to use a vernier caliper (also known as a digital caliper). Measurements made with the naked eye on a measuring tape or ruler are not precise enough to distinguish between close sizes in diameter. To properly measure your composite, close the caliper and zero it. Then open the caliper and place it on the outside of the rod and clamp down. The readout will indicate the diameter of the part.

Proper use of calipers on a composite tube

Length is the precise distance between each end of the rod or tube and can be measured with a measuring tape. To properly measure the length of a composite rod or tube, lay your measuring tape on a flat surface and place the composite on top of the tape. This method is more precise than hooking the tape measure on one end of the rod or tube because the hook on a tape measure is not stationary, which can lead to an inaccurate reading. Laying the tape and the composite part flat also keeps the tape measure from bending. The distance end to end is the length of your part.
